Summer Camps

BFF Craft Camp
August 2 and 4
, 9:30-11:30 am
Cost: $55
Bring your BFF (Best Friend Forever) or make a new one at Abrakadoodle’s BFF Craft Camp! We’ll weave baskets, crochet a potholder, make mosaic coasters or flowerpots, decoupage a picture frame, and more in this fun filled craft camp. We’ll even paint our nails! Bring a beverage, nut free snack and your favorite CD.

Clay Camp
August 3 and 5, 9:30-11:30 am

Cost: $55
Prepare to get muddy! Children will learn to wedge, throw a slab, pinch a pot, hand build, and sculpt. We’ll roll, pinch, pat, press, paint, and sculpt our way through this creative series that features projects with Air-Dry Clay®, Model Magic®, and Modeling Clay®. We’ll make African masks, sculpt owls, create ceramic sunflowers, and horses out of clay. After we’re finished building our creations, we’ll etch then paint our designs. Campers leave with at least 4 projects. Bring a beverage and nut free snack.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Join us on Sept 22nd as the MN Twins play the Cleveland Indians. The bus will depart the Southshore Center at 11:15am and return approximately 3:30pm. Seats are on the skyline club level. We only have 30 tickets available, so register early.

Bayview Cruises

Join other adults for a 1 1/2 hour luncheon cruise and tour. Boarding at 11:15 a.m. behind Bayview Event Center. Call the center, 952-474-7635, to reserve your space $15.00 for SSSP members, $25 for all others.

Learn To Sail
August 9, 11, 16, 18; 1-4 pm
Cost: $395

ASA-certified instructors teach you on dry, stable sailboats from Enchanted Island. A maximum of 3 students per boat. For ages 55+. This 12-hour course gives you the skills and confidence to get underway, tack, jibe, and perform a crew overboard recovery. In four, three-hour, on-the-water sessions you will learn points of sail, six basic sailing knots, how to reef, heave-to, operate an outboard motor and return safely to the dock.

Senior Surf Day

Are you new to the computer and would like help learning some of the basics of using the internet? How do you type in a web address? How do you know if a website is secure? How can you access internet sites that will assist you in finding information? How do you conduct searches using common search engines? You can bring your own computer or call ahead to reserve one of ours. Class space is limited so please call to reserve your spot! 474-7635

Exploradome
Friday, August 20

Where: Minnewashta Elementary School

Registration is necessary as space is limited. Register for one or more programs.

Kids through grade twelve can enjoy the ExploraDome through the cooperation of Hennepin County Commissioners Office and Minnesota Planetarium Society. The ExploraDome is a portable, immersive learning environment where students experience “hands-on, minds-on” learning. Programs feature age-appropriate lessons delivered underneath a 25 foot diameter dome.

Through guided inquiry, based on the Minnesota State Science Standards, students can virtually travel from inside of the subatomic realm to the edge of the known universe. This system is the first portable dome in the world built around the dynamic scaling software known as Uniview. The ExploraDome program inspires minds and leaves a lasting impression on students. Individuals, groups, classes, girl/ boy scout troops are welcome!

Zoom! From Earth to the Edge of the Universe! PLUS an interactive Earth Observatory Program
: This program will help kids grades 3-12 appreciate the scale of the solar system, galaxy, and universe, the vast distances separating celestial bodies, and how objects change over time. The Earth Observing satellite technology will demonstrate how scientists use views from space to study Earth systems on a global scale. (1 hour)

Life in the Universe! PLUS the interactive Earth Observing program:
This program for grades 6-12 will investigate the location & composition of Earth compared to other planets in our solar system to determine why Earth is just right for life! We will also investigate findings that bring to light the possibility of life on other moons within our solar system and planets orbiting distant stars! Plus, with the Earth Observing satellite technology will demonstrate how scientists use views from space to study Earth systems on a global scale. (1 hour)

: Great for Grades 5-12. Be one of the first to try the pilot testing Field Trip to the Moon! Students will launch on a NASA rocket, orbit the Earth, and experience a journey through the hazards of space to orbit and land on the moon. Witness the panoramic view from the last space man walked on the moon, be the first to see what awaits us on future missions to return to the Moon, next time to stay! (30 minutes)

: Students of all ages will learn how to find objects in the current sky, including the visible planets, constellations, and the Moon! (1 hour)

Excerpts from Exploring the Arctic
: Older students will enjoy the story about the impacts of climate change on the cryosphere with images and stories from the 2006 expedition on the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsy - 10 minute program - Combined with ‘Listening to the Northern Lights’ video program experience the sights and sounds of the Aurora Borealis through the ears of sound recorder Steve McGreevy. Listen to the chirps, pops, and choruses that play out when the Earth’s Magnetic Field interacts with the Sun! (10 minutes)

The Solar System:
Students grades 3-8 are the co-pilots of this planetary tour, discovering the characteristics and relationships of objects in the solar system by exploring the Sun, planets, moons, and more, and learning how Earth fits in with the structure of the solar system. (1 hour)
