Mrs. M's Classes

 

Mrs. M Classes and Camps

Let your youngster join Mrs. M. for some imaginative classes designed for kids ages 3-12 unless otherwise stated (toddlers must be potty trained). Each week children will enjoy a different theme. Choose a morning or afternoon session.

  • Morning Sessions are from 9:30-11:30 am
  • Afternoon Session from 12-2:00 pm.

School Days Off events are from 10 am-3 pm. children must bring their own lunch and beverage. Snacks provided. No minimum number of registrations required! Don’t worry about cancellations, as classes will run with 1 or more students!

Cost is $10 per session, or as designated for special events and school off days. Call the SSCC at 952-474-7635 or register online.

January 25-26: Letter K, Kangaroos and Koalas

Pouches and Pockets will be all the rage in this class. Morning and afternoon sessions available: M, W, Th, F; $10 per session per day. Register online.

January 27: Fridays are Great! (School Day Out Class)

Friday fun with indoor snowballs and more! All day session, 10 am-3 pm; $30/day. Register online.

February 1-3, Lemonade and Lion

9:30-11:30 am or 12-2 pm; W, Th, or F
Make lemonade and explore the roaring world of lions. Register online.

February 8-10, Monkeys and Marbles

9:30-11:30 am and 12-2 pm; W, Th, or F
Swing in to the world of monkeys and learn how marbles are made. Register online.

February 15,16, Nuts and Nickels

9:30-11:30 am and 12-2 pm; W or Th
Nuts are fun to learn about and we’ll make a store to spend SSCC Nickels. Register online.

February 17, School’s Out! Fridays are Great!

10 am-3 pm, $30/each
Play 5 versions of our popular game Gravity Ball. Register online.

February 20, 21 School’s Out! Indoor Snow Fun

10 am-3 pm, $30/each; M or W
Snow trails and mapping—winter scavenger hunt and indoor “cotton ball” catapulting. Register online.

February 22-24, Quails & Quigley

9:30-11:30 am and 12-2 pm; W, Th, or F
Explore the quail and find out who Quigley is. Register online.

February 24, Pizza and Project Night

6-8 pm, $12; Friday
Two slices of pizza and make a wooden model. Register online.

Breakfast in Bed Cooking Class
Saturday, May 5, 9:30-11 am, $18 per child
Come in your pajamas if you like, throw on an apron and learn to make omelettes, French toast, or waffles from scratch. Take recipes home to make mom/dad breakfast in bed on their special day! Register online.

Mama Mia!
Tuesday, June 12, 3:30-5 pm, $18
Learn to make Italian handmade stuffed pasta and tasty red sauce. Register online.

Mexican Madness
Tuesday, July 10, 3:30-5 pm, $18
Make beans, tacos and cream frita (Mexican custard)! Register online.

Sushi Making
Tuesday, August 21, 3:30-5 pm, $18
Play with your food! Sushi actually means sticky rice it doesn’t have to mean raw fish. Learn to make different kinds of sushi, from chicken, or fish, to sweet Nutella, maki or strawberry California rolls! Get your chopsticks ready! Register online.

Mannerly Manners

Mother’s Day Celebration Tea Party with Mannerly Manners
Saturday, May 12, 10 am-12 pm, $39 per couple/additional person $15 each
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have tea with a Prince or Princess? How would you hold your cup, or set the table? What is the proper napkin etiquette? This and more is what you will learn with Marilyn Pentel of Mannerly Manners at the Southshore Community Center’s upcoming “Mother’s Day Tea Party!” Bring your favorite adult boys and girls. Mannerly Manners Club for 3-7 year olds

Let’s face it, social skills include so much more than please and thank you. They are a tool that one is never too young to learn. Through innovative props, puppets, music, and role playing, young children will have fun learning a simple introduction, eye contact, how to be mannerly before, during and after a meal and much more. Mannerly Manners® Rules for Youth
Monday-Wednesday, July 23-25, 9 am-12 pm
Ages 7 - 12 (6 year olds welcome with registered with older sibling)
$145 per student includes food, materials and handbook
What will set your child apart and give him/her an edge in a competitive world? Whether playing sports, participating in clubs, making friends, or dealing with teachers, social skills are what give us an edge. This class with Marilyn Pentel of Mannerly Manners® covers introductions, the importance of smile, posture, conversation skills, table manners, and much more. Chess and Game Camps

Summer Chess Camp with USA Chess, Monday-Friday, June 18-22,
Morning Sessions 9 am-12 pm, $255 if registered by 5/4/12 ($280 after)
Afternoon Sessions 1-4 pm, $255 if registered by 5/4/12 ($280 after)
All Day Sessions – pack a lunch and enjoy the day!
9 am-4 pm, $405 if registered by 5/4/12 ($430 after)

Campers ages 5-15 experience chess instruction and play in a fun filled environment designed to improve their skills whether they are interested in casual or competitive chess. Introductory Video Game Creation, Monday-Friday, June 25-29,
9 am-Noon, $285 before May 12/$310 after; Ages 8-15 *
Starting with basic commands, campers will be taught in a step-by-step progression how to build a game that they design. Camp begins with an introduction to Game Maker software including adding rooms, building walls, adding backgrounds, warping to new levels, music, sound effects and many other great techniques. At the end of camp each child is provided access to our custom download site. Registration includes t-shirts, trophies and a certificate with photo. Video Game Creation – The Sequel, Monday-Friday, June 25-29,
1-4 pm, $285 before May 12/$310 after; Ages 8-15 *
In the spirit of Mario, Sonic, Samus and other legendary video-game stars come our newest camp class! Campers use Game Maker software to create a side-scrolling, platform game with running, jumping, falling, climbing, blasting, and enemy stomping! Students will learn how to program real world physics of gravity and friction, as well as plotting out head scratching mazes for themselves and other avid gamers to solve! Actual programming techniques will be used to create power-ups and saved game data during the journey. Get more information or register at USA Chess, or call 888.652.4377. Very Beginning Watercolor Workshop with Georgia Kandiko

Have you ever heard, “Watercolor is too hard?” Well, it is not! If you want to give this magical medium a try, you’ll learn how to control the paint and have some expressive fun. All the materials you’ll need are included in the supply fee. No previous experience is expected, so bring lunch and an open mind.

Beginning Watercolor with Georgia Kandiko
Wed. May 9,16,23,30, 3-5:30 pm, $92 + $20 supply fee
If you are interested in trying watercolor stress free with minimal investment in the materials, then this is the class for you. Paint, paper, brushes, and palette are provided. Through technique demonstrations including wet-into-wet, glazing, graded wash, and dry brush application, you will learn to create delightful landscape, abstract, and floral paintings.

Senior Partners Memberships

Those 55 and over may support community programming and the community center with a membership to Southshore Senior Partners. Membership options: $25 for single $40 for dual. Any age may offer support with advanced giving levels: $50 supporting level; $100 sustaining member. Members get a newsletter, reduced price lunches, discounts on some classes and trips.
