Southshore Center Events and Activities

Snow Sculpture for Arctic Fever

The annual arctic fever event is for all ages, and the snow sculpture is especially great to involve kids of all ages! Three great prizes include certificates from Big Thrill Factory, Hurricane Grill & Wild Wings, and Lagos Tacos. Scultping takes place the week of January 11 and must be completed by 5 pm. Friday, January 16.

Snow Sculpture Voting and Pizza Party

Who doesn't love snow sculptures and free pizza from Joey Nova's? Then there is the free cocoa and Excelsior Brew! Come to Southshore Center, Friday, January 11, 5:30pm-8:30pm to select your favorite snow sculpture and to enjoy some great pizza and beverages. Voting ends at 7:45 pm and winner will be announced following. No registration necessary for this free event!

Zumba Gold

A lower intensity version of Zumba, but still a great workout!

Zumba
Mondays at 6:30 pm; $10 drop in
Get fit in this Latin inspired dance fitness class. No experience necessary. A discount punch card is available at class. Register in class.

Senior Tai Chi
Free trail class Monday, January 7, 10 am
Regular session Mondays, January 14-February 18, $48
Instructor Ron Erdman-Luntz has been teaching seniors Tai Chi for over 25 years. Studies show that Tai Chi enhances the quality of life for seniors by improving balance, gracing us greater ease of movement and range of motion, and reducing stress. Give it a try!

Fused Glass Open Studios

First Tuesday of each month February and March (2/12 or 3/12), 6-8 pm
This fun studio is for novices and beyond! Join instructor Stephanie Jochims of Glassy Lady and experiment with 4 pendants, coasters or an extra small dish project for just $38, or try a medium platter for $48. The instructor will have many projects for you to choose from.

Pinterest Project Monthly Creative Classes

2nd Monday of each month beginning on February 11, 10 am
Find out first hand many fun and uniuqe crafts, homegood items, food experiments, and instruction that is PINTEREST on the INternet. Together we will pick one of a kind 'pinterest' items to make, build, create, or 'try our hand at' each month when we meet! Check the website for the following month's supply list to pick up and bring along or submit an idea for an upcoming class you would like to try or lead! This is an informal club open to the public. All ages welcome. Check with Mrs. M for under the 'Just for Kids' tab for kids programs at the same time.

Watercolor Classes

Beginning Watercolor with Georgia Kandiko
Series of 6 lessons: Wednesday, February 13-March 20, 1-3:30 pm, $139

Try watercolor stress free! Paint, paper, brushes, and palette are provided. Through technique demonstrations you will learn to crate delightful landscape, abstract, and floral paintings. Bring your own supplies or order for $20 when registering.

Continuing Watercolor with Georgia Kandiko
Series of 6 lessons: Wendesday, February 13-march 20, 9:30 am-noon, $139

Each week the instructor will present a different lesson demonstrating techniques and interesting watercolor effects. Bring your own watercolor supplies and paper or order for $20 when registering.

Spring Garden Fair

Valentine's Day Party and Luncheon

If you can’t make it to lunch you can always call in an order for take out and have the meal for dinner—No mess in your kitchen and no extra trip to the grocery store!

Senior Partners Memberships

Those 55 and over may support community programming and the community center with a membership to Southshore Senior Partners. Membership options: $25 for single $40 for dual. Any age may offer support with advanced giving levels: $50 supporting level; $100 sustaining member. Members get a newsletter, reduced price lunches, discounts on some classes and trips. TED Talks

Will Our Kids Be a Different Species?

A video replay of a TED Talk by Juan Enriquez who says that since humans have evolved throughout history, could we be in mid-upgrade now? Thre is evidence that suggests rapid evolution may be underway. Is the exposure of our kids to modern technology changing their genes? Join us as we watch, discuss (maybe debate) this interesting subject at our monthly TED Talks presentation. RSVP for talk and lunch at 474.7635. How to Discuss Race

A video replay of a TED lecture by New York City hip-hop radio DJ Jay Smooth, acclaimed commentator on politics and culture, who uses the issue of how to talk about race and racism to get a the larger subject of how can we be "good people" and "imperfect" at the same time.

Have fun at our wine-tasting fundraiser and Celebrity Iron Chef competition. Enjoy a little Frank Sinatra (impersonator!), a little wine, and A LOT of fun! Chefs compete for traveling trophy.
